When a child struggles to concentrate, stay organized, or manage impulsive behavior, it can raise important questions. Could it be ADHD, or something else? At Skylands Pediatric in Sparta Township, New Jersey, our team takes a thoughtful, step-by-step approach to screening for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and teens. We understand the concerns families face, and we’re here to help clarify what’s going on and guide the next steps.
ADHD can look different depending on age and personality. Younger children may have a hard time sitting still or listening to directions. Older kids and teens may seem disorganized, frequently lose things, or take longer to complete schoolwork. For some, impulsive decisions or emotional outbursts are a concern. These behaviors can cause stress at school, at home, and in friendships.
While these signs may point to ADHD, they can also overlap with anxiety, learning differences, sleep problems, or other developmental issues. That’s why it’s important not to jump to conclusions without a thorough evaluation.
Parents at Skylands Pediatric can expect our providers, Dr. Carol Calabrese, Dr. Inna Meskin, Dr. Alexis Capozzoli, Renee Thomas, APN, or Joe Larena, APN, to listen carefully and ask detailed questions about your child’s behavior, school performance, sleep patterns, and family background. We may also request input from teachers, since school is often where symptoms show up most clearly.
To support the evaluation, we use standardized ADHD rating scales. These are questionnaires completed by both parents and teachers that compare a child’s behavior to what’s typical for their age. In many cases, we’ll also do a physical exam in our Sparta Township, New Jersey, office to rule out other causes for symptoms, such as vision or hearing issues.
If screening suggests your child meets criteria for ADHD, we’ll talk through options. Some families benefit from behavioral therapy or parenting support. Others may consider medication or a combination of approaches. We also work with local therapists and schools to help coordinate services and advocate for classroom accommodations.
If screening results are unclear or more complex needs are identified, we may recommend further evaluation with a psychologist, psychiatrist, or developmental specialist. Our goal is to make sure every child gets the right kind of support.
ADHD isn’t something children simply “grow out of.” But with the right tools, kids with ADHD can thrive. At Skylands Pediatric, we provide care that grows with your child, from early screening to adolescent support.
