Prevention of Illness and Disease Through Well-Child Exams

Dr. Carol Calabrese, Dr. Inna Meskin, and Dr. Alexis Capozzoli call Sparta, New Jersey, home to their pediatric practice, Skylands Pediatrics, where child well exams are a high priority. Our doctors are experienced, skilled, educationally oriented, and board-certified in pediatrics.

We embrace the prevention of illness and disease through scheduled well-child visits. Well-child exams are vital in preventing childhood diseases and illnesses.

What Are Child Wellness Exams?

Skylands Pediatrics in Sparta, NJ, explains that child wellness exams are physical, emotional, and mental exams and assessments of your child as they pass through specific milestones. Our doctors look at each milestone your child enters to ensure they meet most children their age in particular skills.

Is your child ahead of the majority of children their age? Are they meeting the skill sets of most children their age? Is your child behind and has yet to conquer the skills of children their age?

Our doctors may do the following to ensure your child meets each milestone's growth and development expectations.

  • Physical exam
  • Review the skill sets at each milestone
  • Blood pressure, temperature, oxygen level, pulse rate
  • Heart and lung sounds
  • Height and weight
  • Examine eyes, ears, nose, throat, mouth
  • Abdomen check
  • Hearing and vision exam
  • Behavioral mental health screening as needed

Immunizations, a Special Wellness Concern

Our doctors review the immunizations your child has received and give them vaccinations that are due. Some parents do not believe that their child needs vaccinations because many childhood diseases are all but non-existent, and may ask, "Why does my child need the measles, mumps, or chickenpox vaccination, as these diseases are non-existent?"

These childhood diseases are non-existent because of vaccinations. If parents refuse immunizations, these diseases will return. The minor side effects of vaccinations are nothing compared to the side effects of getting the disease and its possible long-term effects of the disease. Immunizations are a significant part of prevention.
